Caring for your Hearing Aids during the COVID-19 Outbreak

2 min read

If you have hearing loss and wear hearing aids, you may be concerned about how to care for your devices without visiting your hearing care practitioner’s office during the COVID-19 outbreak.

But, there is no need to worry! The good news is that there are several great options available to ensure your hearing aids are in peak working order…without the need for a traditional office appointment.

Consider asking your hearing care professional if you can do a “drive-by drop-off and pick-up” to have your hearing aids cleaned or serviced. This would allow him or her to provide service while you wait in your car or come back later to pick them up. The likelihood is that your provider is more than happy to provide flexible solutions to keep you – and their office staff – healthy and safe. And, it certainly doesn’t hurt to make suggestions that you feel will help you the most right now.

Tip: Find out if they offer a “batteries by mail” program. This will conveniently allow you to keep extra batteries at home, without the need to visit their office to re-supply. They likely even offer cleaning kits and other helpful supplies to keep you hearing your best while you’re at home.

Ask your provider if your hearing aids come with a telehealth option. Some hearing aids today can be fine-tuned remotely, using software to send programming changes and adjustments from their computer to yours, requiring no visit to the office. And, in some cases, you may even be able to talk to your hearing care professional face-to-face, in real-time on your computer, to ask questions and troubleshoot any problems.

Always remember your healthcare team is there to serve and support you, especially when times are challenging. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them to ask about how they can best help you, no matter how creative the request.
